  8.     On the evidence, Peter Ackroyd does not mind flirting with
  9. failure. He spent much time on a biography of T.S. Eliot, a
  10. project that experts said could not be done given the mass of
  11. papers that are still unpublished and off limits to researchers.
  12. Ackroyd's T.S. Eliot: A Life appeared in 1984 and won critical
  13. praise for its readable, informed narrative. Similarly, his
  14. fiction, including The Last Testament of Oscar Wilde and
  15. Chatterton, seems designed to appeal to the smallest conceivable
  16. number of readers, those who savor imaginative reconstructions
  17. of the lives of dead authors. Against the odds, Ackroyd has
  18. gained a sizable following, both in the U.S. and in his native
  19. Britain. And now he has written a novel about an archaeologist
  20. and an astronomer.

  22.     That is not the whole story of First Light, of course, but
  23. the conjunction of these two characters -- one digging down into
  24. the earth, the other peering up at the sky -- gives the novel
  25. its deep focus. Mark Clare, leading a team scraping away at a
  26. swelling of the earth in the south of England, thinks he will
  27. uncover a Neolithic burial site some 5,000 years old. Damian
  28. Fall, in an observatory nearby, concentrates on the wave
  29. spectrums arriving each night from a star 68 light-years away.
  30. Despite their different occupations, both men are obsessed with
  31. finding and reading evidence of the past.

  33.     The present, however, keeps intruding. Ackroyd sends a
  34. diverting cast of laborers, onlookers and crackpots skittering
  35. across the old stones of the excavation. Also on hand and
  36. strewing wisecracks is a music-hall and TV comedian, now
  37. retired, who has come to the valley in search of a missing
  38. chapter of his own history. And someone -- or something -- does
  39. not want the archaeologists to succeed. The site is plagued by
  40. thefts and accidents. Perhaps, as some of the diggers claim,
  41. spectral shapes are really to be seen roaming about and mucking
  42. up the works.

  44.     Ackroyd, 39, keeps this contemporary mystery suspenseful
  45. without obscuring the older question: Can the past truly be
  46. known? With all of its here-and-now high jinks, First Light is
  47. an eerie, entertaining hybrid: P.G. Wodehouse grafted onto The
  48. Golden Bough.
